Recalls

Things go wrong with our cars as they age. It helps if you know which problems are likely to develop in your model.

Vehicle recalls in the news such as Toyota cars are easy to find, but older cars have their design faults and recalls too and this is a good source of information if considering repairs to your used automobile.

Motorists trying to discover what is wrong with their car  this article with links to information about faults in car makes and models going back as many years as I can find, and covering as many models as possible. This may help you to see what's wrong with your car, or help you to recognize that some models just suck!

I have many other articles about cars, and you will find more specific and common faults across models when reading the car buying ones.

Fortunately some terrific sites have done the hard work for me and to keep my word on this, I provide the links below. If you know of others please let me know in the comments capsule below.

Gearbox problems can be expensive. Find out if your model has any gearbox weaknesses.

Things that go wrong.

If you have owned a few different makes and models of cars, you may have noticed different problems have happened with the differing make or model of cars you have owned.

The problem may be an accessory that stops working properly, a globe that blows often, a heater that doesn't provide enough heat, a steering pump that fails regularly, or at the other end of the scale, ...... complete failure of the vehicle for no apparent or obvious reason.

You will notice some faults are common and expensive in some models, while others have smaller problems that are cheap to fix. Comparing makes and models on these sites can indicate which cars to avoid buying too!

Enjoy your search.

A decent gas analyzer can track down many tuning problems.

Mate this is a great resource to find out whats wrong with your car?

I check mine out against the list, it is a Ford Falcon and there is no recalls appropriate to my model!

Great Hub thumbs up on the help on Motor Cars.

Excellent resource for anyone looking for a car. I have had a lot of problems with my Renault as it has gotten older which has cost me quite a bit of money. When you start to research on the Internet you find that many of the faults are actually quite common and consequently must be as a result of poor design. Just type in 'Problems with Renault' on Google and you will get a list of models, click on the one you are interested in and you will get a list as long as your arm. You can do the same with any car and get similar results.

Ok.. so if my truck's brake lights work when the engine is off.. but NOT when the engine is running... Where should I look to troubleshoot.. or is this just special cuz I'm special? Thanks Earnest!!

earnestshub Hub Author 21 months ago

It is not unusual for truck brake lights to be wired to come on without the motor. This one is simple enough to answer if that is how your truck is wired. You have an open circuit when the engine is running, so if the stop light circuit is not working when ignition is switched on, someone has moved the wiring making it open circuit through the ignition switch, if it is a later model truck a brake sensor has malfunctioned or an over riding circuit has entered the configuration, and there are several ways that could happen.

Or it could be just cause you are special!

Hahaha! Thanks Ern! Wow, you're absolutely brilliant! If I drop it by your place could you help me fix it? I shouldn't have to brake too often between here and there!?!?!?!! Do 'overriding circuits' mingle without my approval? I think I have gremlins pulling wires willy-nilly!

I'm thinking I'm special anyways!

..... the good news first.

A full mechanical assessment confirms that you are special!

As for the brakes? A bit hard to pin down sitting here, but if you give me the make and model, and tell me what condition it's in, I bet I can track the problem down for ya!

This is the kind of hub I'll come back to as I need it, or become curious. My old car is about to fall apart, so it has problems its twins don't. it does things like runs hot when the heater is turned on. Thankfully, summer is close so that won't be a problem again until next winter. Thanks for the write.

Brian, I have owned a few Renaults and am still a fan of some models. Their small people mover and some others had that rotten little four cylinder motor with a weak cam chain and dicey tensioner buried inside two full engine casings and costing about $1200 for your average mechanic burning time trying to get all the plastic out of the way without breaking it to dig in to a job that is probably as quick to do by dropping the whole motor and gearbox assembly! What a dog! The electric windows are similar in life to the bloody engine! Horrible.

I had 2 Renault 10's one I hotted up to specs similar to an 1108cc Gordini. I also had an R16. Both had design faults, the R10s both ( bought new 2 years apart) needed a new clutch cable actuation bracket. The first one broke off, the second one I modified as soon as I picked the new car up. Nothing serious ever broke, both had unbreakable motors and drive-trains!

I was horrified by that small Renault motor in the "Scenic" as it was known here.

The R10S was used in weekend races and Gymkhanas almost from brand new! unlike the R10, the 10s sported a down draft dual throat webber carburettor and a cylinder head that was easily modified to take bigger valves higher compression and could be ported. The exhaust manifold I modified to suit a Brabham racing exhaust made by the great Sir Jack Brabham for the racing Gordinis.

I had the R10S spinning so fast I often bent a pushrod, so was in the habit of carrying one. On the 10S undo 2 bolts 5 minutes, new pushrod! Great days in Renaults! :)

Ok Ern.. here's a new twist to my truck issue.. ok, so now the speedometer, odometer and fan have quit. The "service engine soon" light is on and the emergency brake light doesn't go off all the way.. BUT.. my brake lights now work. The light has come on before when the radio quit, but now it works again.. Solve this. Gremlins.. or am I still special?

PS.. the truck runs great.

I love challenges! You have small people in your electricals. I cannot tell from here if they are Gremlins or not.

Give me a few details and I will probably be able to sort them out for you.

Do you live down a rough gravel road by any chance? How many miles has the truck done? Remind me what make $ model.

You are special, but in a good way! Try performing an exorcism on it in the meantime...

Ah.. you dear friend! It's a Chevy 1500 XT (maybe). It's white. Does that matter? It needs a bath - maybe it has a bad attitude cuz it's dirty. I also have not given 'it' a name.. could be it craves an identity. Exorcism should be effective should it not like the name I choose. Oh.. it has approx 124,000 miles on it.

Maybe, instead of 'horsepower' I have mice running on a wheel.. I should through some seeds in there for a snack!

Thank you Ern! - oh.. I live and drive in a well paved area. You've got your work cut out for you!

Now Candie they made these things with motors ranging from little V6s to 7.4 litre V8s, and for a long time. Give me a clue. Which year?

Oh my gosh.. had to go out to see.. now keep in mind, that by the truck to the house I'd forgotten.. sheesh.. 1994. I guess you can't tell by my fancy dress I'm usually quite 'on the ball'.. gee whiz!

I have researches the V6 model for design faults and recalls.

I have to say, the wiring has so many problems and recalls it is still very hard to pin down.

The 94 has a list of problems as long as my arm!

Ignition switch faults, an earth wire jumper that was fitted under warranty, light wiring system recalls, overheated electrical wiring, the list goes on and on.

I think an exorcism is a good idea. :)

earnestshub ...Good information ...my experience was my car was idling and it for no unknown reason (although this type of wiring was discontinued now on cars after 1997) zoomed in reverse and almost crashed through the doors of Lowes. Hey ...watch what year the car is that you are walking behind....or in front!!

Thanks for sharing and really we need more of this type of information ..my best to you and your success!

Thanks gjcody. That is a very weird problem isn't it?

Crystal 20 months ago

I currently have to complete an ergonomic evaluation of an item or piece of equipment with regard to human cognition.

As I work in the automotive repair industry I have chosen to do my research on an automotive hoist- but with limited resources and studies carried out on vehicle hoists and mechanics I am having a bit of difficulty referencing sources and finding relevant information. – I think I may have chosen an item too complicated!

I am wondering if you are able to guide me into the right direction or give me some advice on common problems (not all mechanical, but rather human error problems) with using vehicle hoists.

thank you

earnestshub profile image

earnestshub Hub Author 20 months ago

I will try Crystal. Daily inspection of any hoist is important to maintaining safety and low wear operation.

Hoists, at least quality hoists need little maintenance and are very well made and reliable.

For this reason this daily check is seldom carried out by the mechanic as it should be. They always assume it is OK in between inspections.

When I have come back to do the free service on new hoists I usually discover that the information about using the hoist supplied has not been read, and often get calls to fix something which is explained in the manual.

Other service problems develop through ignoring service intervals for cable adjustments, hydraulic pump filter inspection, drive belt inspection, worm drive inspection for hoists such as Tecalemit which are electric motor without hydraulic power and are driven by huge nuts running up and down a long threaded bolt. The nuts have a wear safety limit which you can see by looking through a slot. Mechanics usually ignore the wear limit almost until complete failure.

I am not sure what you need to know, but all my information is just from my work, so other than hoist manufacturers sites I don't have many outside sources. I hope this helps a little.

and inspections scheduled for the hoist as well.

Hoists that have mechanical arm locks can be left unlocked after the hoist is raised allowing the vehicle on the host to move.

When using 2 post hoists with extendible arms, a heavy vehicle can be loaded with the weight in the wrong place, either forward or back from the weight centre, causing the hoist to fail by pulling the floor mounting bolts out and falling over or jamming the hydraulics, stalling the electric motor, or breaking the hydraulic pump itself if it is electric/hydraulic.
