Design the ideas car of the future!.
90Can we design the car of the future?
I believe that the average logical person with an interest in transport can add to the debate on car design, and in this hub I intend to show that we are one helluva lot smarter than the design wiz kids give us credit for. When it comes to seeing current problems that need to be solved it seems they need our help!
So with a fair bit of disgust for the thirsty heavy complicated cars of today, and very little respect for manufacturers current direction, I say we offer the designers some ideas.
I realize that many inventions and innovations will not transfer to OEM (Original manufacture) easily. Some good ideas will involve total redesign from the chassis up, others may involve simpler hydraulic suspension, to lose some unsprung weight.
Let's design the car of the future right here!
Is this the car of the future?
Would the car of the future look like this?
Seating and getting into the seat.
Lets start with entering the car. The seats need to raise when we open the door. Getting down into the seat is currently a risky business that can and does cause back injuries, lots of them according to my pet ER nurse. Having hurt myself a few times getting in and out of sports and racing cars in particular I can add personal experience of my own!.
One of the main reasons for me buying the Honda city when it came
out in 1984 was my bad back. Solid supportive seats impressed, but the
main thing was the massive access when you opened the door. You just walk into the little Honda.
If the seat raised when we opened the door, and turned towards us so we could sit in the seat from normal height and then have it drop down and turn back to the forward position after we were seated this would solve one problem.
Renault will release a Clio in 2010 with a seat that swivels toward the outside.
Fold away steering wheels is another way to make it easier for driver entry. Old and well proven idea that needs to be a standard on new cars.
Mini mini!
Entering and exiting the car.
The Dymaxion Car designed by an architect.
Back seats.
Back seats could be designed to do the same. I can think of a half dozen ways to do this since sensors can detect when the seat needs to raise and lower.
Electric motors and solenoids can be used to control the movement if no better design emerges, although I think this could be simplified and mostly mechanical still using sensors or employing the weight of the person entering the car as the source of power by creating an inbuilt leverage point such as a hand grip.
Electric motors have recently been developed that operate through a tiny motherboard that can be mounted on the motor itself. These new electric motors can produce up to one horsepower although not much bigger than a box of matches, using a scrambled circuit to keep the windings cool, so no problem with sourcing basic components for short period power use.
A
pure mechanical operation may also be a way to go, with the seat
mounted on a cam that raises the seat as it turns, possibly operated by
the door being opened for cheaper cars. This would seem feasible, as the difference between the required seat movement and the door opening distance should produce a leverage of about 3 to 1.

Help the driver to make the right decisions!
Dashboard instrument clusters and driver information.
The reliance on millivolt meters for fuel and temperature are old hat and inaccurate as are magnetic drag speedometers.
Instruments that are hard to read in the dark or bright sunlight must be completely re-thought. Update these to modern sensors on all new cars and get rid of the rough estimates idea, as it leads to running out of gas, engine temperature rises that are not detected early enough to save engine damage and speeding fines.
Instruments should produce text that describes the problem in easy terms to the driver along with instructions as to how best to proceed in overcoming it.
Modern motors are usually destroyed by people ignoring the current warnings, and even a blown globe in a warning light can lead to losing a motor.
Headlights.
Lighting.
The lighting on cars is still old hat in my view as well, and needs a major revamp. The extra indicator in the mirrors was a good move, but there is much more that needs to be done.
Headlights although improved are not moving forward in design other than to make them fit the body style and provide a brighter but not always better view of the road ahead.
My 1984 Honda with it's tiny little headlight with QI globes provides almost as much light as the latest headlights with gas globes, and a better spread than many.
The view of the side of the road should be much wider than it is, with the light intensity varied in zones so as to provide a wider diffused light to detect pedestrians and animals on the roadside. Lights should change in spectrum to enable visibility without blinding people.
Tail and stop lamps need to be visible from a wider angle and be able to be seen clearly in bright sunlight.
Rear indicators need side lamps so that other drivers can see when a car is turning from any position of view.
A "U turn" indicator is another idea offered by agvulpes in the comments here.
If we make U turns, why not have an indicator to ensure our intentions are not misunderstood as a right or left turn?
Heating and cooling.
There is enough solar power on a hot day to provide at least a portion of cooling. Some newer cars have a fan that runs on solar heat from the roof or glass area to power this small fan that circulates the air when the car is not in use for a while, like in the supermarket parking lot. The car is kept a lot cooler.
Why not use the solar panel to charge an over capacity battery then have it run an air conditioner compressor when the car reaches a certain temperature when it is standing in the sun?The compressor be be re-designed to operate efficiently with small input and still operate properly from the engine.
A battery will be able to do this for hours if the car is well insulated and the air conditioner is on a low setting, then recharge itself by being always turned on at the solar panel and topping up the battery. Batteries can be compartmented these days, so this would not interfere with electronics if it did go flat anyway.
heating is easy enough with internal combustion engines, but what other ways can we find to convert energy to heat our cars?
We have power like friction and inertia, any heat caused in producing horsepower, any heat caused by braking, even if that braking is provided by the drag from alternators it will still produce heat, all energy sources.
Could electric heating with batteries work with this sort of set-up?
Buick design
Innovations anyone?
Could you put another different coloured and located indicator on the offside to show the car is turning even though you are where you can't see the indicator on the other side of the car?
It would avoid some accidents in the future where a third vehicle
veers to avoid someone who is turning .... and hits you even though you are on the other side and
apparently out of the way?
None of these ideas are expensive to implement, and are just common sense in my view.
Some ideas will have other implications of course and those will need to be considered.
Air bags or a better protection system needs to protect all passengers, unless we believe that the baby in the back seat has less value than the nut behind the wheel who may be putting the passengers lives in danger.
I believe that the current air bags need massive improvement if we are to retain them.
They are expensive, it is easy to hide that they have been removed and the indicator circuit "doctored" and although they save lives, severe injuries are still commonplace and they cannot protect against all potential accidents at this time anyway.
What new innovation will or should replace air bags?
Any design ideas for a future car are welcome!

earnesthub I don't mind at all. At least it might get noticed in the text rather than buried in a comment.
I hope this hub gets noticed because cars have not reached the stage of evolution that they should have.
Hey mate, some pretty cool ideas here! I'm kinda hoping my car of the future will be a teleportation machine or a stargate between my home and the office! As for cars though, you know how they have those watches that "recharge" with motion, can't we get cars to do the same thing instead of using fuel?!! It's green! LOL
Very good idea to write this hub and an interesting read but unfortunately, I am not driver - so in other words haven't a clue. Thank you for your hub.
Hey Earn:
You and I both know that in past history there have been many, such as you, who have tried progressive ideas to improve the looks and safety of cars, Tucker being just one.
Look at the efforts that have been tried to improve gas mileage which the power of "big oil" quickly "deleted." "Money talks BS walks."
Ya can't tell me that, a car couldn't be built that would last a lifetime and include all the wonderful ideas you cover in your "hub."...but hell, that would kill world economy!
You probably read that VW has built a small single seat car that gets over 600 mpg. It'll be selling, to the Chinese, for about $600.00's American.
Good "hub" ...good "dream."
Yer American friend, Qwark. :-)
Earn:
Top speed of that little VW is 75! .. lol.. fast enuf for me in a "degradable" little "chugger."
I see that some garbage disposal company is using the underground gasses produced by rotting garbage to run their trucks...there are so many ways to produce energy, but the Oil cabal has it's fangs buried deep into the jugular arteries of world economics which stifles human creativity and production.
I've said it before: Absolute power corrupts, absolutely!arghhh!
We all should just stop driving and start riding horses! Okay, I'm just kidding. I actually like the idea of using solar power and developing alternative fuels. I don't even own a car right now. But if I'm gonna buy one, I think I'll get the tiny Smart ForTwo (just to make an eco fashion statement).
qwark—I think I said this once before on one of earnesthub's hubs, so my apologies in advance. But on the issue of great gas mileage, I even said to my wife the other day that I find it funny that the catch-all number (atleast here in the US) is 30 mpg. If you're getting 30 that seems phenomenal. Yet, a few years back I owned a 1996 Geo Metro which ran on 3 cylinders, and had plenty of get up and go, even went up to nearly 100 miles an hour at top speed, and when I bought it the sticker on the window said 52 highway, 48 city. And you know what? It got that. Not always 50+ per gallon. But it got the best milegage of any car I have ever owned. On top of that a hybrid only touts 60. Some 80. But I don't find that very impressive to 52 or even 48 from a gas engine. Top that off with the price. Less than $10,000 brand new for a Geo. $30,000 for a hybrid.
No one makes a 3 cylinder car, why? And the Geo is dead and long gone. Even the smart car, which is SMALLER than a Geo Metro was, gets terrible gas mileage in comparison. A Mini Cooper? Terrible, and still smaller than the Geo.
If it really had anything to do with oil, the 3 cylinder car would be back on the lot, and if it were up to me I'd set out to design something lightweight, compact, stylish, AND fuel efficient with a manual transmission and 3 cylinders.
It's not that there's no demand. Metro's at the height of $4 per gallon gas were in very high demand—and those were USED cars by then, long out of production, and if you owned one their value went up.
I wnat my car with ejection seat and anti gravity and can run iwth out fuel!!! i think im a bit too much
I was also going to mention the Geo-Metro, I still drive one right now every day. I get close to 50 mpg.
A kind of silly but very practical modification to any car would be to put the gas tank fill port on both sides of the car. Left or right, you could pull into any gas station and fill your tank from either side. I would like that a lot.
Nice hub, makes you think. Thanks!
With all the talk about conservation I feel the best way to get drivers to buy high MPG cars would be to allow only the more fuel effecent to drive the speed limit.
The larger SUVs and Pickups would have a speed limited tied to their fuel mileage. Want to drive a Hummer, you will cruse at 50 MPH which will save fuel.
I have worked in the automotive industry for many years and I totally agree with the comments here. It is a sad situation how the engineers design cars. They are totally designed to make big money from maintenace and the such. I worked on a SUV that U had to remove the engine to replace a starter COME ON ENGINEERS that is sad.
Keep up the good posts I love it.
Excellent review! Very good points, and especially very well researched. I found it quite informative as I know very little about cars.(Believe it or not, I don´t drive!)
A hub that teaches you something and generates ideas IS excellent!
I am rating it, bookmarking it and Stumbling it!
Thanks for sharing, my friend,
warm regards and blessings,
Al
Some great ideas, so when are you applying to the 'big boys' to properly design cars? I really believe cars are looking all too similar these days, I'm sure you'd be able to help earnestshub.
I have no idea how to replace airbags, but I'll trade in my car on the one you described with the old airbags I don't care.Get the patent and get this car rolling! Thanks Earnesthubs. Waiting for the ad, saving my money. :)
I certainly relate to the redesign of the seats. When you have those teeny cars you have to practically crawl in & out of, it kills your back. It's just inconvenient. Even with the Buick I'm driving, the seat sits too dang low for my back comfort, getting in and out. I'm for changing it for sure. Really informative info here.
I am no designer but my ideal car will be hydropowered, the tyres will be very thick and inusable (money saving plan), the car could also fly as high as a plane (but my top dream will be that I 'll able to go out of space with it...) the inside of the car will be like a Xmas tree too many lighting so functionnel if U see what I mean....
Just out of interest, I have recently found out that I am related to Cecil Kimber, who had a fair bit to do with MG sports. I have sensed him lately and it is very interesting historically and in family history terms.
I now understand alot more about myself, my heritage and the trusty old stead of earlier times.
Not only great ideas but a fun hub as well.
Your hub is now listed on my blog
Cheers
Dale
Great hub! Did you know that a German guy working for BMW discovered how cars can go on water instead of fuel? His invention was refused because oil companies and factories would lose their money! And we´ll keep on talking about global warming, gases and other reasons for the destruction of ozone...I think cars will fly one day ha ha :-)
Hi, interesting article. However, most of your ideas have been designed, made and tested in terms of a: better ergonomy, better security, an easier use, better confort.
The problems that provoked the "no go to production" are:
-lots of extra weight
-loss of good handling
-add of complexity analytic test refused to have
-extra extra extra costs!!!
I do not make comments on Design evolution as a result of implementing the list of suggestions.
The truth is:
To make a car with a low cost (accessible to almost everybody) is the most complicated thing to do. To understand this it is not enough my few words here I am writing...to understand we should live at least 4 hours in technical/Design meeting in which good modifications are refused because they add an extra cost of 0,04 cents for each sold car (if you sell a million cars a year it is a lot of money!!!.
Cars will be better! This is sure , but it is a process and it takes time.
On another site, I posted an open letter to General Motors, Ford, etc of what I wanted in a car. They all wrote back telling me that they weren't going in that direction, and gave me a link to their websites so that I could see what was on offer. Talk about deaf!
You've written quite a site here. I like! :)
if a wheel or wheels were added in mid section of a car witch can be lowered 3" a car would turn on a dime raised again to clrar front and rear this will work as maintaince workrin a power house we use six wheeled carts(small to load) when sharp turns are a must getting servo motors 1000s pounds in weight removed or installed
Hi, how I got here I don't know! ha ha I don't really have a preference for cars, but after working for ford and volkswagon I suppose I should know a bit about them! I just found the picture at the top fascinating! what to have with a new design, Umm, I must admit to wanting a car with every capability, driving, flying and on water! well, you never know! but seriously, the one thing I noticed while working for the car dealers was the fact that they didn't seem to care who bought the cars, for example I had one lady of 84 years old, who went to the dealers to collect her car, she pressed the wrong button, the extra speed button, forgotten what it was called, and went straight through the dealership window! 84 years old! what were they thinking? lol cheers nell
Lots of great ideas written here. I will have to think about htis and come back when I have a suggestion. I do have an idea for electric cars, but I won't put it here. I will email you if you want to discuss it. It is possible someone is already working on it, but ya never know.
interesting and fun!
Hi ernestshub, just a comment on the heating & cooling. If more parking lots would make any effort on adding more area to different forms of coverings, from the small ones having trees as some do, but with the suns ever changing beam of heat, that's not always feasible, plus those birdies that like a nest for their babe's not exactly practical for cleanliness;) it would be very practical and beneficial to our vehicles, planet, and people who NEED cooler vehicles to get into due to health problems, and some medications causing them to overheat, if each parking lot was lined with not even a solar covering but just shaded, it would do a lot for helping use lesser means of cooling a vehicle down. Plus, keeping them from being snow covered in places of snow.
I did take drafting through school, and AutoCad in collage, but I found even the professor to be quite annoying the fact I was the only girl in the class, and the only one who carried a perfect GPA and he would tell us, there was no use DOS on newer computers, it was a thing of the pass, and would in NO WAY understand that I took programming and through visual basic, that yes, all computers still to this day use DOS and always will. It's just updated with visual basic(s) that it's not necessary to use this, I believe we are over a 10.10+ lol, version of DOS with all the new versions of windows from Vista to the various x's (xp etc.)
Think of this form of heating/cooling when you next go to park and try to find the shaded area. Living in the south, if it is noon, I'm at a new store, I actually pull out my compass to find which way the sun will be going so I know where the sun will be so when I come out my car is parked in the shade. IT HELPS, and I don't have to blast my A/C to cool down my car.
GREAT HUB!! Loved it! -Kat
How about the outside temperature indicator blink, flash, or display larger digits at 32 degrees F to alert driver that road may be icy?
The car of the future should have doors designed in a way that they brake apart, in several pieces, during an impact, so people who got into an accident can get out of the car.
Also, the car, that has second floor for a driver, and first floor for the passengers, would make sense. It is easier for a driver to see the traffic, and it fits more passengers. Great for a taxi.
i love taxis!!!!!!!

earnestshub, you do raise some great points about the lack of design thought that goes into motor vehicles. It's almost like 'follow the leader' . Manufacturers seem to afraid to deviate from the 'norm' . Fear of loosing market share perhaps.
One of my pet hates is coming up behind a car who is going to do a 'U' turn. Maybe they could incorperate a 'U' turn indicator into the 'indicator lamps'
Great hub I hope it gets people thinking .
I love the pic of the top car although I can't work out if its a car or a 'vacuum cleaner' LOL
